BOOM BRIGGS KICKS OFF MCR FALL CLASSIC WEEKEND WITH A DEUCE

(E. Smethport PA)

The 3rd Annual MCR Fall Classic kicked off Thursday night featuring the Dave Lundgren Memorial King of the Hill for the Northern Tier Inc., ULMS Late Models. On Friday night the ULMS Late Models were back for the Don Hardy Memorial along with the FASTRAK Late Models for the Jim Jerge Memorial. Boom Briggs of Bear Lake, PA quickly made everyone take notice he was the car to beat by sweeping Thursday and Friday nights events for the ULMS Late Models.

Thursday night the Dave Lundgren Memorial King of the Hill for the Northern Tier Inc. ULMS Late Models highlighted the nights program. When all the dust was settled, it was Boom Briggs in victory lane! The very excited driver from Bear Lake, PA, stated, “This may not be a real win, but its still a win here at McKean County Raceway.” Briggs had to defeat Rochester Mills, PA driver in the final round to capture the $1000 prize. It wasn’t easy either for the Briggs. Briggs won the opening round over Dennis Lunger of Corry, PA. Satterlee won his opening round over Doug Ricotta of Perry, NY. In round two, Briggs drew the defending ULMS champion, Bob Close as his 3 lap competitor. Briggs would outlast the efforts of Close to move on to round 3. Satterlee went up against Brent Rhebergan and would lead all three laps to move onto round 3 with Briggs. Satterlee went right up against current ULMS point leader, Todd Andrews, who had knocked out Chub Frank in round two. Satterlee stunned the crowd with his 3 lap win over Andrews. Briggs went up against, Chad Valone who was coming off a big payday last week in Canada. Briggs sent Valone to the pits by defeating the blue #2v Rocket. The final four cars were Satterlee against, David Scott and Boom Briggs against Dan Stone. Satterlee defeated Scott in the semi final round while Briggs had to make a last lap pass on Stone to move onto the final round with Satterlee. Satterlee would lead the opening lap by a car length and half over Briggs, As lap three of six clicked off the board, it was still Satterlee by a car length over Briggs. Boom would eek out Satterlee at the line for lap four as the pair ran door to door the next two laps till Satterlee slid over the cushion in turn one and two on the final lap leaving clear sailing for the Bear Lake Banzai and his first ever win at McKean County Raceway.

Boom Briggs and Rob Blair were the front row starters for Friday nights Northern Tier Inc. ULMS Late Models Don Hardy Memorial. Briggs shot into the lead over Blair with Greg Oakes, Bob close and Jason Dupont quickly to fifth from his tenth place starting spot. Close would take third from Oakes on lap two. And then would dispose of Blair of the next lap to move into second behind Briggs. As lap five clicked off the board it was Briggs, Close, Blair, Dupont up to fourth and Oakes in fifth. David Scott brought his “Slowride” machine into fifth on lap eight. Lap eleven Slowride would get past Dupont for fourth. As the field took the halway point, Briggs lead had started to dwindle away slowly as Close was gaining ground in his GRT #04 machine. The top five was Briggs, Close, Blair, Scott and Jared Miley. On lap twenty tragedy struck for the #04 car of Close. As Close screamed down the backstretch the slow moving car of Scott Johnson was attempting to exit the track as Close slammed the rear end of the #2J machine severely damaging both cars and resulting in Johnson being removed from the car by the local ambulance crew.

The top five now was Briggs, Blair, Scott, Miley and Oakes with ten to go. Lap twenty-two saw Jared Miley take the extreme high lane around David Scott for third as Briggs was checking out. With two to go, ULMS point leader, Todd Andrews moved into fifth from his seventeenth starting spot but that was far as he would get as the checkers would fall for Boom Briggs capturing his “true” first ever MCR and ULMS late model feature event. Rob Blair was second followed by Pittsburgh PA Motor Speedway champion, Jared Miley and Andrews was fifth. The next five were Oakes, Greg Satterlee, Doug Ricotta, Dutch Davies and Dave Hess Jr.

The Jim Jerge Memorial for the Northeast Regional Touring FASTRAK Series were the next event up. Butch Lambert and Dick Barton were the front row starters. Lambert used the inside lane to his liking as He outran Barton into turn one with John Haggerty in tow. As lap five clicked off the board it was Lambert pulling away from Barton, Haggerty, Max Blair and Dan Stives in fifth. Lambert kept pulling away from his competitors as the race laps clicked off the board With ten to go, John Lacki climbed into fifth. The non stop event went rest of the way to the end as Lambert captured his first ever MCR win over Barton, Haggerty, Max Blair and Lacki.

The Street Stocks were finishing their season with the Border Skirmish Series finale. Young Damien Bidwell and Adam Ashcroft were the front row starters. Bidwell would lead the opening lap as Ashcroft took the lead second lap. Brad Bigley was now in second as Bidwell was now third. Track champion, Adam Sixt was quicky up to third by lap three. Bigley would lose second on lap eight too Sixt who set sail for Ashcroft. Lap ten saw Chris Austin joining the event. Hometown driver, Rich Hemphill moed into third on lap 15. Ashcroft would sail to victory over Asutin, Hemphill, Bidwell in his best career street stock finish.

The mini stocks had their 20 lap feature to close out their 2008 season. Steve Mowery would grab the lead on the opening lap followed by Nick Snazak and Norm Varner. Varner would move into second on lap three with Levi Watson now in third. Watson would move into second on lap four as he started to dog Mowery for the lead. On Lap eight, Mowery would lose the lead to Watson. At halfway it was still Watson, Mowery and Varner in the top three. Stateline Speedway regular, Randy Beckstrom would take over second on lap thirteen. Watson, the three-time winner in 2008 would lead the remaining laps to grab his fourth win of the year which featured a five foot trophy for winning Mini Stock portion of the Fall Classic.

The TJ Signs Pure Stocks saw Dave Derock and Brad Curran on the front row. Derock took the opening lap lead with Curran moving into the top spot on lap two. John Ellwood would work his way up to second and on lap fourteen made his move for the lead as Curt Pastorious worked his way into second behind Ellwood but was unable to get around the #27 machine as he captured his first ever win at MCR!+
