WONDERLING, SIXT Win Memorial Races @ MCR July 19, 2008

Scio, NY native, Jeremy Wonderling captured the BRP CanAm Series Brock Young Memorial to keep the Young Memorial title right where it belongs in Scio, NY. Adam Sixt picked up the Lee Anderson Memorial Border Skirmish Series event for the street stocks as well on Saturday night at McKean County Raceway on Otis Eastern Service, Wellsville NAPA, Close Racing Supply, Insinger Fuel and Wayne Paving night.

The BRP CanAm Series came with twenty-nine drivers from New York and Pennsylvania and when the thirty-lap memorial was to begin with John Waters and Jimmy Johnson on the front row of the main event. As the field of twenty-six rolled down the back stretch on the opening lap the front row cars got together resulting in Waters going upside down at least four times and ending up against the turn 3 guard rail. Johnson would receive the black flag and the original front row was lost for the night. This would now put Glenn Whritenour and defending track and series champion, Jeff Chesebro on the front row for the restart. Whritenour who had won at MCR earlier in the year would lead the field to the green and lead would battle Chesebro for several laps till lap seven, Chesebro would go to the point. The fans would get to see these two drivers swap the lead back and forth over the next few laps as the open ten laps were completed. Unknown to the top two cars, Jeremy Wonderling had charged up to third from his twelfth place starting spot and on lap eleven would move into second and one lap later take the lead from Whritenour as other perennial guns, Steve Dixon and Todd Hansen rounded out the top five. Mr. Excitement kept the #15 of Whritenour off his back bumper till lap eighteen when the yellow would come out for Quincy Sutherland. Wonderling again jetted to the lead as the battle was on behind him as laps nineteen thru twenty-four clicked off till the next yellow for Matt Cobb as the top five still remained the same. The final six laps was all Jeremy Wonderling but Chesebro had his hands full with Steve Dixon as the top two point contenders battled for third with Dixon getting the spot on lap twenty-seven, but it would be Mr. Excitement, Jeremy Wonderling returning to MCR victory lane and winning the Brock Young Memorial for the second time and taking home the $1422 first place prize. Whritenour came home second with hometown favorites, Dixon and Chesebro third and fourth and Todd Hansen was fifth. Heat winners were: Hansen, Jeremy Wonderling, Dave Miller, Jimmy Johnson and Neil Patterson won the B-main.

The NeMicro Street Stocks had their 4th event of the Border Skirmish Series and this event was the annual Lee Anderson Memorial. Bill McKinney and Butch Talbot put on the opening laps of action till Adam Sixt would take over the top spot on lap 3. Justin Baxter would follow Sixt into the second spot as Jeff Hellwig, Joshua Wilcox and point leader Chris Austin rounding out the top five. Several yellow flags would pop up, including one for current BSS point leader, Adam Ashcroft wold slow down Sixt. Austin would pull of the track with three to go and the DNF will most doubt hurt him in his 2008 title defense. At the finish it was Sixt winning his third event of the year at MCR over Justin Baxter in a impressive second, Hellwig was third with Wilcox and Brad Bigley finding fifth at the end. Heat winners were Austin, Rich Wojowictz, Joe Layfield and Sixt.

The Maynards Electric FASTRAK Late Models were next up with Jon Law and Bert Cleer on the front row. Law would lead the opening lap as fifth place starter and current point leader, Max Blair quickly found himself in second and would be your new leader ton lap three. As lap five would click off the board it was Blair, Law, Cleer, Bob Kish and John Lacki in fifth. The first yellow of the event would come out on lap six for the spinning car of Dave Norton Jr. Blair again re-established himself as the car to beat on the restart as eleventh place starting John Haggerty charged to the fourth position and on the very next lap, Mike Wonderling Sr took fifth over from Law who started to fade. On lap ten, Wonderling would take fourth from Haggerty and would chase Jim Frank down for third. Blair would hold onto a comfortable lead over Lacki as Haggerty and Wonderling swapped fourth and fifth back forth behind Frank as the final laps clicked off but the third generation driver from Centerville, PA would pick up another win at MCR and keep his title hopes alive. Lacki was second with Jim Frank, Haggerty and Wonderling rounding out the top five. Heat winners were Blair and Kish.

The John’s Collision Emods came onto the race track with Darren Tarabori in his v6 powered machine against second generation driver, John Woodward Jr. Tarabori and his v6 Emod scooted to the point with Woodward, Vic Vena and Randy Hall in tow. Hall would move into third on lap four behind Woodward and on lap six would take over second. Tarabori’s v6 was screaming down the straightaways but Hall would make the winning pass at the halfway mark as Woodward would follow and Tarabori would slide to third. With six to go, Woodward would keep his white #18 machine just behind Hall as Tarabori and Vena battled for third. Climbing into fifth from his fourteenth starting spot was Al Brewer who was having his best run of the year. Woodward would close in on Hall in the remaining laps but the #10 machine was not going to be denied. Tarabori, Vena and Brewer rounded out the top five behind Hall and Woodward. Heat winners were Hall and Travis Asel.

The Hallock Enterprises - AMSOIL Mini Stocks were the next to last feature with Norm Varner and young half-pint, Damien Bidwell on the outside front row. After a complete restart it was Jim Galloway your leader over Steve Mowery and point leader Levi Watson. Mowery and Watson would swap the second position for several laps as the duo chased Galloway. Varner was still hanging around in the fourth position . Galloway would lead the remaining laps to capture his first win of the year over Mowery, Watson, Varner and Chris Parr came home a strong fifth. Heat winners were: Mowery and Varner.

The KZ102 Pure Stocks finished the Otis Eastern Service, Wellsville NAPA, Close Racing Supply, Insinger Fuel and Wayne Paving Brock Young and Lee Anderson Memorial night of racing with point leader Curt Pastorious and John Ellwood your front row starters. Pastorious would lead the opening lap with Mark Schweikert hot on his tail. Schweikert would take the top spot over on lap four from Pastorious as Ellwood was still third ahead of Brad Curran and Scott Derock. The top five stayed that way till the end as Schweikert captured his second win of the year over Pastorious, Curran, Ellwood and Derock. The point battle in the KZ102 division is very close going into the final few events of the 2008 season. Pastorious, Derock, Curran and Schweikert are all within striking distance for the track title. Heat winners were Ellwood and Jason Ely.

Fans are reminded that MCR will be back in action on Thursday, July 31 as the Northern Tier Inc. United Late Model Series makes their first appearance of the year for the $3000 to win Stephanie Eckl Memorial. It will be the only chance for the ULMS late model teams to get track time before the season ending FALL CLASSIC in late September. A complete card will also be on the program.
