Matt Lux of Franklin, Pennsylvania returned to
McKean County Raceway for the conclusion of the 30 lap Jim Duffy
Memorial that was paying $2000 to win and a guaranteed starting spot
for the season ending, Priority Care RaceFAN 50.
Fifteen of the original seventeen Northern Tier Inc. ULMS Late
Models returned for the remaining 27 laps with defending three-time
ULMS champion Bob Close and Jeff Hoffman leading the field to John
Powell’s green flag. Close would get sides ways in turn two
resulting in cars checking up and Greg Oakes sweeping by but at the
line it was Hoffman still your leader as the yellow lights came out
for Paul Grigsby who collected the front stretch wall ending his
night real early. During the yellow, Close went pit side with a left
rear flat tire. The restart, Oakes took his Pioneer Propane, Rocket
Chassis charged into the lead over Hoffman. With five laps in, Matt
Lux was now up to second from his sixth place starting position with
Boom Briggs in third and Jason Dupont who restarted ninth was now in
fourth and charging to the front, as Hoffman slid back to fifth.
Dupont took third on lap six from Briggs with an inside turn two
move. Oakes was pulling away from Lux and was looking good at
possibly his first ULMS win. Briggs and Gregg Satterlee would move
around Dupont on lap ten as the Northern Tier Inc #No7 would go to
the infield with a broken axle ending the “Captain’s” night. Oakes
was still in command till lap fourteen when the “Franklinville
Flyer” pulled up lame out of turn two handing the lead over to Matt
Lux. Oakes later diagnosed the problem as a broken rocker arm ending
his bid at winning his first ever ULMS win. With the halfway flags
being displayed, Matt Lux was now the new leader with Briggs back up
to second and Satterlee now in third followed by Dennis Lunger and
Close who was back up to fifth. Close would move into fourth on lap
seventeen as Hoffman would go back to fifth and his run would end on
lap eighteen with a right front broken spindle on the Hoffman Coach
Co. #32 Rocket. Satterlee and Briggs would catch the slower car of
Wally Fox and the three car battle for the lead seemed to be in the
making but Lux would get around Fox and leave Satterlee and Briggs
behind. Lap twenty-four would see Briggs go pit side unexpectedly
with an overheated motor handing third place to Close. The final few
laps would see Satterlee work high and low on Lux, but he would fall
a car length short at capturing his second consecutive Jim Duffy
Memorial. Following Lux and Satterlee was Close, Dennis Lunger and
Brent Rhebergen rounding out the top five.
Mark Schweikart and Butch Talbot led the twenty-five Johnson
Distributing Street Stocks onto the track for their 2010 season
debut at MCR. Leading lap one was sixth place starting Jason Dobson
of Ceres. Butch Talbot would come back to lead laps two and three
and it quickly the fans were treated again with the best racing from
MCR’s most competitive class. Lap four would see Leon Szweda take
over the lead with defending track champion, Andy Michael moving
into second only to be scored fifth on the next lap as the top five
spots were tightly contested. Talbot would go back to the front spot
on lap nine with Dobson now in second. With the race halfway done,
it was Talbot, Dobson, Jeff Woodward, Ron Budinger and Szweda was in
fifth. Talbot was still your leader with five to go as the top three
were still the same as Jeff Hellwig was now in fifth. Dobson would
get around Talbot with three to go and would hold off the #28 of
Talbot to capture opening night win. Following Dobson and Talbot
were Woodward, Budinger and Hellwig.
The Maynards Electric FASTRAK Late Models rolled onto the facility
with rookie driver, Adam Sixt on the front row besides second
generation driver, Kyle Zimmerman. Zimmerman would lead lap one over
Sixt and Jeff Cheesebro. Cheesebro driving the Paul Geiger #97 GRT
would move into second on lap two as Sixt was in a battle between
track champion, John Lacki and FASTRAK rookie Justin Tatlow. Tatlow
would take third on lap five as David Scott was now up to fifth.
Zimmerman was doing all he could to hold off the Smethport, PA
driver, Cheesebro, but the hometown favorite would take the lead
over on lap nine. With ten to go it was Cheesebro, Zimmerman, Tatlow,
Lacki and Scott with Max Blair coming to the front. Lacki would move
into third on lap 13 as Blair and Scott were battling for fifth.
Blair would take fourth over with five to go. One lap later the
little Titusville Terror was now in third as Max disposed of Lacki
but he was running out of laps to catch the top two. Zimmerman kept
pressure on Cheesebro but it was Cheesebro capturing his first ever
FASTRAK Late Model win substituting for Paul Geiger. Zimmerman was
second followed by Max Blair, David Scott and John Lacki.
The Crosby Mart Emods were the next event on the program as Butch
Southwell and defending track champion, Randy Hall were the front
row starters. Hall who was just coming off a United Emod Series win
the previous Sunday quickly got the lead from Southwell as third
place starter, Travis Asel would slide into second. Former late
model driver, Al Brewer would grab fifth from Mike Eschrich on lap
two to enter the top five. Southwell would regain second on Lap four
from Asel as Brewer was applying heavy pressure on Peterson for
fourth. Hall was building a comfortable lead as the real battle was
between Asel, Peterson and Brewer for third. Brewer and Vic Vena
would both get by Peterson on lap seven as Brewer would move into
third on lap nine with thirteenth starting Brent Rhebergen following
Brewer’s tracks. Lap thirteen would see the yellow lights come on
for Leonard Enos and this would allow Southwell, Brewer and
Rhebergen a shot at Hall for the win. A wild restart saw Brewer make
a bonsai move for second on Southwell resulting in Rhebergen and
Peterson getting pass Brewer. Rhebergen would sweep into second with
five to go and the chase was on for the race leader, Randy Hall.
Rhebergen would close in the remaining laps and brought the fans to
their feet on the final lap to come up a car length short. Hall
would take the win over Rhebergen, Southwell, Peterson and Brewer
salvaged fifth.
The Jerge’s Used Auto Parts Min Stocks had their first event of the
2010 season with Brent Harris and Chris Parr the front row starters.
Caution would come out on the opening lap and Parr would go pit side
and the new leader would be fourth place starting Brad Ullman
followed by Bill McKinney. Doyle Harris Jr. would take over the lead
on lap three with Kyle Babcock now in second. With half of the event
over, the car on the move was Mike Miller who started last and was
up to fourth challenging Bill Bailey for third. Miller would get the
third spot on the final lap as Doyle Harris Jr would take home the
win over Babcock and Miller. Bruno Mowery and Bailey would come home
fifth.
The Wellsville NAPA Auto Parts Pure Stocks would complete the
program with Curt Pastorious and Blaine Krott your front row
starters. Krott would take the lead right off the start from
Pastorious as Zach Hamer would slide into second place. Hamer would
bring the yellow out on lap five with Krott still leading the way
over Brad Curran, Andrew Smith, Fred Ely and Joe Perrin. On the
restart, Perrin made an awesome move to jump into second behind the
teenager (Krott). Krott who has many years of experience in go-karting
would take home his first ever MCR win over Andrew Smith Curran,
Perrin and Pastorious would round out the top five.
MCR will sit idle for a few weeks and come back to life on THURSDAY
May 27 with the Northern Tier Inc. ULMS Late Models back in action
for the 5th annual Dave Lundgren Memorial. A complete program for
the FASTRAK Late Models, Emods, Street Stocks, Mini Stocks and Pure
Stocks will also be on the program. For more information, check the
